BURY'S public should be warned: anything they say will be taken down and used in evidence to help the county crack crime!

The borough has been chosen to pilot a new scheme which lets residents suggest ways of improving the quality of the police service.

Greater Manchester Police is the first force in the UK to introduce the project. It will be run via the internet for six months starting tomorrow.

Bury's involvement comes only days after Greater Manchester's Chief Constable David Wilmot praised the borough for its "forward thinking" approach in tackling crime.

The new suggestion scheme will give people in Bury another way of telling senior officers how police in Bury could operate more effectively to benefit the whole community. People can access the suggestion scheme through GMP's website at www.gmp.police.uk and then by clicking on the icon marked Bury Community Initiative.

After its inaugural six-month run, the website will be reviewed and it will be decided whether the scheme will be introduced full-time in Bury and across GMP.

Chief Superintendent Phil Hollowood, commander of Bury police, said: "This is an excellent initiative which marks an exciting step forward in GMP's bid to improve its service. We hope it will encourage people living in Bury to offer genuine and constructive suggestions on how we can improve the service we offer to them."

All the suggestions and any personal information will be dealt with confidentially and not used for any other purposes.

"All the suggestions we receive about policing in the borough will be acknowledged and thoroughly examined," Mr Hollowood added.

"After consideration, if an idea is deemed plausible, it will be implemented in the Bury area."

The UCI Cinema at the Trafford Centre will donate two free tickets every month to the best suggestion.
