A NEW PASSWORD scheme has been launched by British Gas to try and give elderly customers extra peace of mind during the quieter summer months.

Aimed at combating the persistent threat of bogus callers and conmen, the free voluntary password scheme is one of many special services now available for disabled, elderly and blind customers.

The new initiative involves a personal codeword known only to British Gas and the customer, which is quoted before customers open the door to gas workers.

And with continued reported incidents of bogus meter readers and service engineers targeting homes in Lancashire in recent months, the energy and home services company is urging all its customers to be extra vigilant.

Andrew Hanson, of British Gas in the North West, said people should be taking simple security measures such as attaching the door chain and never handing over cash in advance.

He added: "Bogus callers can be a worry in many areas and, unfortunately, the elderly or those with special needs are often particularly vulnerable.

"The summer months are often quieter as families go on holiday and this can be the time that tricksters try to take advantage."
