MORE than £2million of government cash is to be ploughed in to Ribbleton in a scheme aimed at encouraging health and development in children.
The Sure Start programme is one of four schemes across Lancashire and was set up following a six month intensive consultation between parents and community groups.
It aims to work closely with families to promote health in pre-school children, improve social development and strengthen the community as a whole.
Planning permission for the Sure Start centre, costing around £790,000, has yet to be finalised, but to get the scheme up and running by this September temporary accommodation will be provided in the Pope Lane area. Ribbleton was chosen for the scheme, say North West Lancashire Health Authority, because of its need, particularly for educational achievement.
Helen Walsh, health promotion specialist for the Authority, said: "I've been involved in child health for the past 25 years and this is the most exciting project I've ever worked on.
"Sure Start involves healthcare from pregnancy to pre-school, primary school and even to secondary school and has great learning opportunities for young parents."
Two parents from Ribbleton, Kerrie-Ann and Mandy who have been involved with the project right from the start, added: "We want to help to provide opportunities for parents and children, better education activities and to build on the strengths of the community by providing information on what is available within local communities and Sure Start."
