ON Sunday Bury Croquet club had two squads in play at home, the Caesar team played a very strong quartet from Southport.
In the doubles Captain Len Forkin partnered Jean Hargreaves who was playing in her first Association Rules match.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the visitors got the better of them. On the other court Colleen Forkin and Yvonne Gibson also lost.
In the singles, Len, against a top class opponent, used his bisques (handicap terms) to very good effect to score a win by some distance.
Yvonne, whose opponent was also of high calibre, finished with a shooting match where all four balls needed only to score the peg point. The Southport player got the last point to win by one.
Colleen also had a close game.
Jean, in somewhat a baptism of fire against a rapidly improving middle handicap player, put up valiant resistance but the visitors won the match by five games to one.
The short lawn team visited Bowdon and in this format all play all.
In the first round Captain Jeff Young lost to a high handicap player who made some very good plays.
Ken and Margaret Anderton and Barbara Young won their games to give Bury the edge. In the second round both of the Andertons won.
After lunch the Bury team won three of the four games and continued this form in the last round, Ken completing a clean sweep of all four games.
Barbara notched up her third win and Jeff his second, which with Margaret's two meant that the visitors had a good win by 11 games to five.
