CAMPAIGNERS concerned about the plight of local asylum seekers are calling on support at a public meeting.
The "People of Prestwich Co-operating Against Racism and For Asylum Seekers" have organised a meeting at Prestwich Methodist Church on Monday, September 18.
Members have sent invites to prominent national speakers, including outspoken politician Tony Benn.
The meeting will also hear direct testimony from local asylum seekers and give other groups working in the Prestwich area a chance to get together and share ideas. Groupspokesman, George Heron, said: "We would like to hear from anyone else who wants to be involved, individuals or groups. So far only religious groups have been approached but there are others who might like to get involved. Local people might also like to offer their support."
The meeting was called following a smaller gathering last month at the church, in Bury New Road, of a number of people who expressed concern about the plight of asylum seekers.
Mr Heron said that 14 people from church groups, trade unions and political pressure groups attended the meeting and all had been touched by tales of asylum seekers who were fleeing difficulties in their own countries.
But they agreed that more could be done locally to help them in the UK if more information about their whereabouts was made available.
Mr Heron said: "This may protect them from people who might be hostile but it also makes it difficult for those who want to show that many in the community welcome them."
He added that with people working together such difficulties could be overcome.
