ONE of Leyland's most historic treasures is to be covered by unsightly metal guards after a spate of attacks by drunken yobs.

The old Leyland Motors clock on Hough Lane roundabout (pictured) has been bombarded by gangs of drunks throwing empty beer bottles and bricks.

The situation has become so bad in recent weeks that the council has been called in to protect the memorial.

And after many meetings and discussions, the cabinet decided on drastic action -- the guards are expected to be in place by this weekend.

Local residents and councillors are fuming over what they say is a 'mindless minority' spoiling it for everyone else.

The old clock is part of a number of timepieces made in 1934 by Leyland Motors designed to tell lorry drivers up and down the country the exact time. Only nine are in existence around the world with one in Australia, one in South Africa and the rest in different transport museums across the country.

Councillor Gina Lewis, leader of South Ribble council, says the clock is an integral part of Leyland's history and which is something people should be proud of.

"It's an absolute crying shame but we have decided to try and stop this thuggish minority by putting these unsightly guards up," explained Councillor Lewis.

"It's a last resort, but we have to do something about it before the clock is lost forever."

Her comments are echoed by Howard Gore, executive member of the council responsible for many of Leyland's monuments and ancient clocks.

He added: "This mindless yob culture has decided to smash up a major part of Leyland's culture. It makes me sick.

"I would urge anyone to contact the police immediately if they ever see this type of behaviour.

"Our heritage is something which we should be proud of."
