A HOLLYWOOD blockbuster is being used by the police to help local people combat the menace of car crime.
The new movie Gone in 60 Seconds stars Nicholas Cage as a legendary car thief lured back into crime to save his brother's life.
In the film Cage's character claims he can steal any car in under 60 seconds - and no alarm or fancy lock can stop him!
Although the story is fictional, car crime is a serious issue and the police have decided to make good use of the film's high profile.
PC Wade Dooley of Lancashire Constabulary explained: "The film presents us with an excellent opportunity to promote the prevention of car crime in the county. Every person who goes to see Gone in 60 Seconds will be given a Crimestoppers Smart card with their cinema ticket. The card offers crime prevention advice and also encourages people to report those who commit car crime. Also, in the film foyer, filmgoers will be able to see more displays and information as well as talk to officers about how to prevent car crime."
Crimestoppers Co-ordinator Andy Edwards said: "This is an excellent initiative that raises awareness of car crime. It helps by providing members of the public with information on how to prevent car crime and also promotes the use of the freephone number 0800 555 111 in the fight against car crime."
The scheme's at the ABC Lancaster and Morecambe Apollo.
