AS yet another festival bites the dust, the latest MBI newsletter assures us that we can expect more festivals for Morecambe and that everything under the MBI is rosy... what an insult.
What can we expect them to say about this latest cancellation? Probably the same as they said about Summerbreeze: 'nothing to do with us' but was it not the MBI who promised cash to organise three festivals?
Would an experienced entrepreneur make the complex preparations involved in organising these festivals without a definite promise of funding? I think not!
It appears the MBI did not reveal that there was a tendering process for the festivals, why not? One can only assume that due to their inexperience in local government they are unaware of the rules governing the council on such matters, could this be why they are now furiously back-pedalling insisting they promised him nothing?
Why, when the tenders were in was Steve Middlesbrough allocated only one of the festivals and two awarded to an out of town company?
Steve Middlesbrough has proved year after year that he has the expertise and commitment to the town to offer the best package, even if he was not the cheapest.
The MBI were elected without a financial policy, (or any other policy come to that) if they are unable to find the minuscule amount of money needed to ensure the festivals went ahead then how can they be trusted to manage a multi-million pound budget?
Whatever mistakes the last administration made (and they did) they pulled out all the stops to make sure these events (which are vital to Morecambe's regeneration) went ahead, they would never have allowed festivals or the Red Arrows to be cancelled.
As someone who works in a town centre business, I know how unhappy many businesses are, this will cost them thousands in lost revenue on what was their best weekend of the year, and with a season as short as Morecambe's the local businesses rely heavily on these events.
The MBI promised the earth, yet they have, so far, delivered little more than a pebble.
They are quick to take credit for anything that is good yet refuse to accept responsibility when things go wrong and constantly blaming others who are less able to defend themselves.
So far it would appear that MBI should stand for 'Megalomania before integrity' and their slogan 'people before politics' should be 'self interest before anything'.
They have taken great pleasure in taunting Labour with shouts of 'come clean, come clean' and tell us why this fiasco has happened.
It is all very talking about getting it right next year, but what happens if all the disappointed visitors of this year boycott Morecambe next year? Believe me, there are a huge number of them!
Judging by Cllr Morris' unbelievable arrogance over this debacle I fear it is highly unlikely they will come clean over this or over any other nasty little surprises lurking around the corner.
