ST HELENS fell 16 runs short of victory against Liverpool Competition new boys Caldy at Windleshaw Road on Saturday.
Batting first on a good wicket Caldy paced their innings quiet well and reached 208 all out in a touch over three hours.
Their opening bat Aston was most impressive scoring 98 before being bowled by Gary Sheppard who finished with the excellent figures of 4-35 from 14 overs. Gary was backed up by Bobby Kenny 2-43 from 10 and acting skipper Darren Tyms who cleaned up the tail impressively with figures of 4-27 from eight overs..
In reply St Helens fell short of the target despite a very fine 72 by opener Roger Burrows which included 10 fours. Neil Hull also played well for his 27, while Friar, Sheppard, Lowe and Gore all got into the teens.
If St Helens had paced their innings a little better they would surely have gained maximum points.
The Second XI at Caldy could only draw with the scores level. Batting first St Helens declared after 45 overs on 170-5 skipper Ian Lawless making a very good 91. In reply Caldy reached 170-7 at stumps.
The Third XI went to Bootle who taking first knock made a massive 241-3. Coggins scoring an unbeaten 101. Alas the Third XI could muster only 61 all out. Simon Watmough making 22.
