Clarets goalkeeper Paul Crichton is hoping that the result at Bolton could be a good omen for things to come.
Twelve months ago on the opening day Burnley came from behind to draw 1-1 at Wycombe and never looked back on their way to promotion.
"It's always nice to get the first one out of the way and to get a result under your belt. We started that way last year and hopefully it will be as good as last year," said Crichton, who spent half-a-dozen years in Division One with Grimsby and West Brom before making the switch to Turf Moor two years ago.
"It's nice to be back in the First Division but I've just got to do a good job for Burnley and see how we go.
"I think every game this year is going to be a big test but the boys have proved they can do it last year by getting out of the Second Division and having a bit of a cup run.
"We've got half a chance this year," he added.
The keeper, an ever-present last season, believes Burnley will be competitive this term and stay well clear of the relegation scramble.
And with just one defeat in their last 13 League games, Crichton feels the Clarets' fighting spirit will again have a big role to play.
He added: "We trained really hard in pre-season."
The results weren't that good but when it came down to it the boys were brilliant on Saturday.
"We went a goal behind but as we've proved before we don't sit and sulk but get on with the job and we got a result out of it. And in the end I think we were unlucky not to get the three points.
"That's the character of the team now. The gaffer has brought in the players he wanted and they are players that have that character as well."
