BLACKPOOL based West Coast Wasps added another trophy to their bulging trophy cabinet winning the Blackpool U12's Summer roller hockey tournament 2000.
Held at the Blackpool Sports Centre Stanley Park last weekend the event was sponsored by BNFL Fuel and Flying 'F' Skates. They won all their group games 6-0, 7-1, 11-0, 12-0, 11-0, 7-1 and 3-1 to gain a place in the final against Sheffield's Graves Flames.
The Flames, last years National Champions, are a strong physical side who came out fired up. End to end action saw the Wasps take the lead first through Chris Arnone. Flames equalising in the 10th minute. Wasps Bentham put them back in the lead assisted by Chaunce to make it 2-1. By now the Flames were struggling to match the relentless pace of the Buzzing Wasps. Bentham on target again assisted by Clark and Robert Adams fired one in from Arnone to make it another convincing win for the Wasps, 4-1 the final score. Three of the Wasps team Richard Bentham, Bobby Chaunce and Andy Clark made it to the dream team that is selected from all the players, by other team managers.
The Wasps have won the North West League 2000 beating teams from Preston, Warrington, Wigan and Liverpool and have secured a place at the National finals to be held later in the year. Winners of the Nationals go on to play in Europe against other European champions.
The team is in action again on Bank Holiday weekend at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on the North East Coast against all the top BiSHA U12 teams.
