PUB football teams from the Fylde could soon be playing in a match that will go down in history.
And regulars at the Bloomfield Hotel -- a minute's walk from the home of Blackpool F.C. -- might be swapping the Tangerines' turf for the glorious grass of Wembley Stadium.
A national link-up quiz between selected pubs across the UK is giving pub teams the chance to play one of the last-ever fixtures at the legendary stadium before its demolition to make way for a new, improved venue.
Peter McCulloch, landlord at the Bloomfield Hotel, felt his pub had the best chance of success and told the Citizen: "My pub is all about the football spirit -- we're packed on Saturdays before and after matches, and with Blackpool's ground just down the road it is a really good omen. We also have regular quizzes so I'd say our customers will be able to answer most questions between them."
As well as playing at the nation's favourite stadium, players will arrive in team coaches, experience the dressing rooms and famous tunnel and their game will be handled by FA officials. There'll even be a replica FA Cup and medals.
Peter said: "This is a golden opportunity, and to anyone who plays football it will be an absolute dream come true."
A total of four pubs across the Fylde coast are taking part in the national competition including the Bloomfield Hotel. The others are the Links Hotel on Heeley Road, St Annes, the Newton Arms on Staining Road, Blackpool, and the Raikes Hall on Liverpool Road, Blackpool.
Landlords are urged to pile as many locals and regulars in as possible, and take part in five rounds of questions which will be flashed up on the screen throughout the night before customers ring a special hotline with the answers.
The eight winning teams will go through to a penalty shoot-out to be held at half-time at a Premiership game in September, and the two sides that make it through will have the great honour of facing each other in the Bass Leisure Retail Cup Final on October 22 -- the last day at Wembley before the bulldozers move in.
The quiz kicks off at 7.30pm on Thursday, August 24, at each of the four pubs.
