FRIENDS of Rev Peter Hughes celebrated his decade of service at the 355-year-old Chowbent Unitarian Chapel.
The congregation gathered after the Sunday morning service for their regular refreshment break and time of friendship together. But Peter had a special treat ready for his flock, in addition to the usual cups of tea and sandwiches, they shared a glass of wine to mark the special occasion.
John Readett, Chairman of Chowbent Unitarian Chapel Committee, explained: "Before Peter's arrival, the chapel had no minister for approximately 12 months. It was in the doldrums with a low attendance. Peter, along with his family, settled in Atherton very quickly. We've all taken to him, and his wife Sandra, who is a lovely lady."
Mr Hughes said: "Much has happened in 10 years, our congregation has grown, not simply numerically, pleasing though that is, but in confidence, in strength of spirit, and, importantly, in vision.
"I take no credit for this, any achievements we have made, have been jointly made and, for that reason, they will tend to last."
A native of Liverpool, family man Peter, has a warm sense of humour which is welcomed by chapel members old and new. John Readett added: "Peter's sermons often have a little humour thrown in -- usually about his exploits at the supermarket! He is also very helpful with problems, anyone can come to him whether they are members of the chapel or not.
"Peter has many fine qualities. He offers help and counselling especially at school, where he can be quite often found sharing a quick cuppa and debating with various members of the teaching staff.
"On behalf of everyone at Chowbent, I would like to say thank you and all the best to Peter and his family."
