WORK is due to start this week on the historic bridge in Rainhill first built in 1829 by George Stephenson.
The bridge takes A57 traffic along Warrington Road near Rainhill railway station, and although the main structure is sound, the newer steel extension needs re-painting and strengthening.
The southern footway will be closed for 10 weeks while work is underway and pedestrians are advised to cross the busy road at the controlled crossings on either side of the works. Some work will need to be carried out using traffic signals which will limit the road to a one-lane control and although the council say they will try to keep delays to a minimum, drivers are advised, if possible, to find an alternative route.
Bethell Construction Limited are the main contractor while the council has carried out the design and project management. Rail safety is being managed by Jarvis Facilities for Railtrack plc.
