INTERNATIONAL weightlifter Mike Pyke has been given a real uplift in his record-breaking quest at the winter world championships.
The wheelchair strongman from Green Street, Hindsford will be out to set a new British record for himself and his late, great mate, Dave Smith.
Sadly, last month, fellow international weightlifter Dave from Heathfield Drive, Tyldesley, passed away in his sleep.
His chance of medal glory may have gone but Dave's parents Leo and Audrey are determined to do everything possible to back his pal Mike's quest.
Donations totalling £355 which have been gifted in Dave's memory will be used to pursue that British record goal which both weightlifters targeted.
The Smith family have given the fund proceeds to Mike to back his trip to the championships being held in November in Nevada, USA.
Leo said before handing over a cheque: "We know it is exactly what David would have wanted. We'll be rooting for Mike."
And delighted Mike vowed: "I'll be out to try and win but my main aim is the British record. That is what we both wanted so much.
"I'm very highly honoured that Dave's family think so much about me. All my efforts in Nevada will be dedicated to Dave.
"I'll really be psyched-up. It is going to be a good scrap, I'll be fired-up for us both.
"And I'm sure Dave will be with me in spirit."
