I FEEL I have to reply to Mr A Davis (Letters, August 17) about the Sealed Knot Battle in Witton Park.

He says that common sense was a tragic casualty.

Would he have preferred that no care had been taken so that anyone could have walked through an area where equipment was being both used and kept so that any idiot could possibly have stolen it and injured others.

The Sealed Knot members take great care not to cause injuries and if any unwary person had blundered into a battle area the outcome could have been very serious.

It is a shame that some people have to try and spoil an event for so many, especially after the hard work involved by members of Sealed Knot, who give up their own time to help good causes and to interest people in an important phase in our history.

This battle was for a couple of hours per day over two days out of 365 -- unlike the regular fairs which can last all day over several days and, therefore, Mr Davis could, I am sure, have granted some leeway.

D KENNEDY (Mrs), Nutter Road, Accrington.
