BURNLEY launch their Worthington Cup campaign against Hartlepool United tonight with striker Andy Cooke insisting the Clarets can make their mark on the competition.

Burnley haven't been past round two for at least six seasons and and have fallen at the first hurdle in each of the past two years.

But a tie against Third Division Pool gives them every chance of making amends and Cooke insisted: "If Tranmere can reach the final like they did last year there's no reason why a club like Burnley can't progress and do well like Tranmere have done and Stockport have done over the years.

"And financially it could be very rewarding for the club."

However, the striker insisted that there will be no complacency ahead of tonight's first round, first leg at Turf Moor.

He added: "After the atmosphere of Saturday and the hype of the First Division it's a game that hasn't got the big stage but the gaffer has warned us that he wants to take it seriously and like any game you play you want to win.

"The gaffer has pointed out strongly that he wants to win the game and doesn't want us going in thinking it's going to be easy.

"I think we're all going to be up for it and we want a big lead to go into the second leg and obviously to progress to the second round."

"It has its own perils with injuries and suspensions but everybody wants a good cup run. Winning any type of football match and continuity is good for team confidence.

"We'll be expected to win the tie but it won't be as easy as that. I don't think we'll get a massive gate but nevertheless it's what it leads to. It's a good thing and it catches the spirit of the supporters."
