OH how I agree with Jean Lewis (LET, August 15). May I make a few extra points.
Firstly, the season is longer than eight months (or does it just seem like it?) what with friendlies, Euro 2000 the lead-up to the qualifying games to the World Cup then the World Cup itself seems to go on for 12 months. Secondly, Mrs Lewis is a very lucky woman if she can afford to overhaul her bathroom. As this house also has two season ticket holders, so that means the added cost of home shirts, away shirts, away match tickets and travel. Also the cost of food at away games (which sometimes seems more expensive than the tickets themselves).
Thirdly, holidays have to be taken before the season starts as to miss a game amounts to sacrilege. So therefore our holidays are at peak times.
Lastly, if we decide to go down to our local on the night of a match, I have to sit there and listen to a full post mortem of the match, so I find it easier not to go out.
So, Mrs Lewis, you have my sympathy, but I suppose we do have Christmas Day to look forward to as I am sure that is the only day of the year that there is no football. Please do not correct me if I am wrong as along with all other football widows I can dream.
