A CYCLIST is seriously ill in hospital after he fell under the wheels of a waste disposal truck in Holcombe Brook on Monday (Aug 21).
The man, believed to be Polish and aged in his late teens or early 20s, suffered serious head and leg injuries in yesterday afternoon's accident.
Police closed off the top end of Longsight Road, near to its junction with Bolton Road West, for more than three hours while accident investigation officers attended the scene.
The injured cyclist was given first aid by witnesses prior to the arrival of paramedics. He had to be freed from the bicycle, which was wedged underneath the vehicle. The man taken by ambulance to Bury General Hospital, with a high-speed police escort.
A second lorry driver, who witnessed the collision, was treated at the scene for shock.
Sergeant Pam Hadfield of Bury Traffic Unit said: "We have yet to identify the cyclist. He was conscious after the accident but was in a poorly condition.
"We would like anyone who has information about the crash to contact us on 0161 856 8072."
An elderly pedestrian suffered minor injuries when he walked out in front of a bus in Market Street, Bury. The accident happened around lunchtime yesterday (Mon Aug 21).
The man sustained a cut to his head when he was in collision with a Rossendale Transport single decker bus close to Yates's Wine Lodge. The casualty was taken to Bury General Hospital for treatment.
