POLICE prepared for a showdown with poll-tax protesters only to be met by a small and friendly group.
Police had diverted traffic and set up metal barriers outside the court buildings in Manchester Road, Accrington, in preparation for a huge crowd.
But the throngs failed to arrive and within an hour the police wound down the operation and the court doors were closed and locked.
