DRIVING to work the other day I was bemused when someone driving one of those new VW Golfs let on to me with a friendly wave.
I didn't recognise them, and was confused.
Until it suddenly struck me; they thought they were driving a Beetle, and Beetle drivers do, as a rule, let on to each other with said friendly wave or similar gesture.
Well just get this clear: I was driving the Beetle; it is old, rusty, noisy, has the engine in the back and doesn't need water adding at any time.
The other driver was driving a Golf GTi with a rounded body-shape which has a nice quiet engine in the front complete with radiators.
When you do get a real Beetle then you can (a) let on to me and my fellow Beetle drivers and (b) check out the following Veedub websites which have a plethora of great stuff for all us rear-engined, air-cooled types.
www.newlancsvwclub.co.uk (this is especially good for local readers)
www.openroad.ca/volkswebbin (especially good if you're Canadian)
www.volksworld.com
www.bigboyztoys.co.uk
www.vwheritage.com
www.volkswagen.co.uk (especially good for Golf drivers, not much cop for Beetle drivers)
