BURY CTC
UNUSUALLY there were three rides last Sunday. The hard riders of the A group's run went to the Manifold Valley in North Staffordshire and the B group's ride was to Scorton via the Trough of Bowland.
Meanwhile a small group travelled to Inglewhite near Garstang. The intention being to check out the new cyclists' cafe for future runs.
It was more like autumn when we set off with mist and a nip in the air. As usual the ride went out through Haslingden, Accrington and Whalley. For a change we went via Hurst Green to Longridge. We passed Stonyhurst College where Cromwell and his men camped before the Battle of Preston. A local bridge is still called Cromwell's Bridge. After Longridge it was into the lanes still wet from the local showers that we had luckily missed.
At Inglewhite the cafe is easy to find being by the side of the green. It was completely empty and gaving the attitude of the proprietor it was easy to understand why.
He had taken umbrage because we had eaten our sandwiches on the village green beforehand and only required a pot of tea.
For this we were made to feel very unwelcome. A place to miss!
Afterwards the group split up with some continuing to Scorton to return over the Trough and maybe meeting the B group. Others chose Preston and Belmont. The third route was to Ribchester and back over the Roundhills.
This Sunday's rides are Hoscar (A group) meet Bury at 9am, Ainsworth Arms at 9.15am or Croston (B group) meet Bury 9am.
BURY CLARION
OUR racing members have not been as active this year as in previous years, but this it is likely to change in the last weeks of the season.
Frank Jefferson and Ernest Roughley are two members who have made a late start to their season by riding two recent 10 mile time trials.
In the first event their returned times of 26, 43 and 27.13 respectively. Frank's 30 seconds advantage was cut to a margin of six seconds ln their next event when they recorded 26.57 and 27.03 respectively.
It was a nostalgic day out last Sunday for Frank Jefferson when he and Charlie Westlake enjoyed a long distance ride to Manifold Valley which lies just within the Peak District National Park.
The reason for nostalgia is that it was mid twentieth century when they were first together on a Clarion run to this delightful traffic free destination.
TANDEM RIDING CLUB
FOR THE VISUALLY
HANDICAPPED
SEVEN tandem pairs and the triplet meant that there were 17 members out on last Sunday's run to Hollingworth Lake, which was something of a resort for the cotton mill workers in the 19th century.
Some of this tradition lingers, as there were entertainers present at the cafe we use by the lake. Here, Janine Pritchard was intrigued by a pet hedgehog in the care of the cafe owner.
The outward route was by way of Bacup and Littleborough and we returned home directly through Rochdale. While most members come from the metropolitan area of Bury, we were delighted to have 15 years old visually impaired Chris England from Westhoughton back with us after a few weeks absence.
WEST PENNINE
ROAD CLUB
JOHN Bunting the club's only active member residing in Bury, has enjoyed good form in recent weeks with two wins, two seconds places and one third place in time trials up and down the country.
He won the Kent Valley 10 mile time trial in 21 minutes and 33 seconds and the Central Lancs CC 25 in 55.15. His second places were in a National time trial series 25 with a 55.21 ride and the Mid Devon Cycling Club 25 in 55.40.
The latter event was an experimental one approved by Devon & Cornwall Police with riders starting at 30 second intervals, as opposed to the regulation one minute intervals. If the event is found to be successful and adapted, it will mean later starts and earlier finishes and the time taken by events minimised.
John's enthusiasm for his sport meant that he rode this event during his annual holiday. He also rode the North Devon Wheelers 25 but punctured.
His third place was in the Liverpool Wheelers 25 with a 57.05 ride. His other places were sixth in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 30 and 7th in a National time trial series 32 mile event at Shrewsbury.
