JOBLESS: Bury's jobless tally was continuing to rise to new record levels since the end of the Second World War. The total number of people unemployed stood at 1,374 which comprised 1,030 men and 344 women. The number of vacancies improved slightly to 132 but there was a significant shortage of men's jobs.
HONESTY: The old maxim of honesty being the best policy brought an unexpected reward for local man Harry Dale. While motoring with his wife in France, the printer found a bag containing cash and cheques worth over £200 in the road. Thinking it had dropped from the car in front Harry gave chase but lost the unsuspecting driver.
Undeterred Harry alerted the police who phone ahead and had the car stopped 50 miles away. The occupants were a Dutch family who could not thank the Dales enough. On returning home to Walmersley Road in Bury, the Dales were surprised to receive a Parker pen set and a letter expressing the Dutch family's thanks for their good deed. BRUNO: Bruno the mischievous mongrel found himself the star attraction when he got stuck in a ditch. The helpless hound's yelp for help attracted a crowd of children, workmen and neighbours of Salford Street, Chesham, but all the commotion worried and confused Bruno who began to snarl and snap at anyone who tried to rescue him from the eight foot deep hole.
Eventually, 20-year-old Mrs Elaine Greenhalgh plucked up the courage and climbed down a fire brigade ladder to reach the pitiful pooch.
"He's got into trouble like this before," said his owner David Breen, aged nine.
SEE ME!: Bury teachers were preparing to celebrate their centenary of trade unionism, two years too late. Officials of the Bury association of the National Union of Teachers believed that their affiliation to what was originally the National Union of Elementary Teachers came in December 1875. However, it was revealed that somewhere along the line someone in Bury, possibly in error, wrote down a "5" instead of a "3".
OLAC MOONBEAM: Hawkshaw dog-breeder Mr Derek Tattersall was challenging for a national Pup of the Year championship. His 10 month old Highland white terrier bitch, Olac Moonbeam, gained one of the coveted 10 final places by winning the eight heat at the Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show at Edinburgh. The grand final will be held in London in December.
SHAKERS: Bury FC's 4-0 aggregate win over neighbours Rochdale in the first round of the Football League Cup earned the Gigg Lane outfit a second round draw with Jack Charlton's Middlesbrough.
