AFTER reading Chris Alexander's 'All for McDonald's' letter (Letters, July 27), I had to write in to tell him it's nothing to do with snobbery.

Where are all the McDonald's across the UK placed at the moment? They are all placed in the central business districts of towns or on industrial parks, NOT in a residential area. The proposed one at Windle is to be built in a residential area so why should the residents of Windle have a McDonald's placed on their doorstep?

In fact, why should any residential area in the whole of St Helens have a McDonald's built in it? I think the whole of St Helens and the UK should fight against any McDonald's being built in any residential area in the UK. The French have already done this and have managed to ban all McDonald's from being built in residential areas so why can't we?

I suppose Chris would be very happy if a McDonald's was built next door to him, with all the extra pollution he's already annoyed about and that extra 650 cars a day passing his house. People opposed the Chinese fast food place in Eccleston because of it being built in a residential area, like the McDonald's in Windle. No doubt he was probably one of those who opposed it then because it was on his doorstep. This time the McDonald's won't be on his doorstep so he's all for it. So why can't he admit that the McDonald's, like the Chinese fast food place, can't be built in residential areas.

I take it Chris hasn't seen the construction of the new 11-screen cinema in town. Saying there's nothing for youth in St Helens, the cinema is not being built for OAPs. I also believe that calling the place 'The Village Burger House' wouldn't help its cause, as it is still being built in a residential area.
