CAR crime in Britain costs a staggering £3 billion a year.
And the battle to beat it begins on Saturday in Leigh.
A 'Drive out car crime' campaign is being launched at Halfords store with expert security advice (11am-3pm) from Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Council and cut price steering lock deals.
Cllr Brian Jarvis, speaking on behalf of campaign promoters Wigan and Leigh Community Safety Partnership, said: "Vehicle crime accounts for over a fifth of all recorded crime. Although the borough has one of the lowest rates for car crime in Greater Manchester, we've still got work to do.
"We will continue to work with all our partners, victims and offenders too, through this campaign we can hopefully help motorists protect their cars."
GMP Supt Peter Owen said: "This is a great example of what can be achieved by involving police, council and businesses in tackling crime related issues."
Halfords manager Jack Thompson promised further involvement: "As a responsible retailer with a major interest in the motor trade, Halfords Leigh are committed to the promotion of effective vehicle security for the protection of our customers and community. We look forward to participating in similar activities in the near future."
