LANCASHIRE Evening Telegraph readers have sent a message to Calderstones bosses calling for a review of security.
Eighty eight per cent of readers who rang our telephone hotline voted for a full and open review of security at the medium secure unit and called for Home Secretary Jack Straw to intervene.
The voteline opened after authoritative sources revealed to the Evening Telegraph that arsonists, rapists, child sex offenders and people who have committed offences such as manslaughter had been housed at the hospital.
Voters left messages of support for the Evening Telegraph's investigation into the type of patients housed at Calderstones. And many voiced their own fears and concerns.
One woman said: "As a mother of two young daughters it has given me a real problem. We are moving into the area and we have already made the decision not to move to Whalley."
Another caller said: "I live in the centre of Whalley. A full review should be carried out before something happens and before it is too late."
Callers included worried villagers and people claiming to be Calderstones staff.
One person claiming to be a staff member said: "The Home Secretary should have a closer look at what is going on at Calderstones."
Just 12 per cent of callers said they were happy with security at the medium secure unit.
One caller said: "Security has always been good at Calderstones and there is nothing new regarding the patients they have been dealing with."
