POLICE are praising the public for their support in tackling violent crime during a weekend operation in St Helens.
Officers have hailed Operation Calm, which took place on Friday and Saturday nights, a success. The action was well received by the public and early indications are that there was a significant reduction in crime, particularly assaults.
The operation is the first phase of a bid to cut a seasonal rise in violent crime and is part of the Merseyside Force's Streetsafe Campaign. The initiative targeted licensed premises and crime hotspots in a bid to decrease violent crime and to tackle licensing issues. A crime prevention campaign is also underway to urge people to consider the consequences of their behaviour.
Officers in high visibility fluorescent jackets patrolled the town centre and they were supported by the Special Constabulary, British Transport Police and the force's Operation Support Group.
Superintendent Williams, added: "The success of this weekend has ensured this initiative will continue. We are determined to make the streets of St Helens safer for everyone."
The Streetsafe Campaign was launched in December last year and so far it has led to more than 1,000 people being arrested across Merseyside. The aim is to turn community information into decisive action.
Anyone with information which may help the police should contact any local station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
