RUBEROID Sutton CC suffered a crushing defeat in their top-of-the-table clash at Wavertree on Saturday.
They lost the toss and were invited to bat on a lively wicket. And they were soon in trouble at 12-4. But as the innings wore on, the wicket eased and Sutton reached 78 all out.
Wavertree then knocked off the runs without loss.
The second team, meanwhile, were beaten off the last ball in a thriller at New Street.
Batting first, Sutton made 147 all out, with Stuart Rimmer 36, Alec Marsh 24 and Karl Gavin 18, all batting well.
In reply, Sutton's bowlers soon got among the Wavertree batsmen, reducing them to 42-4. However, Wavertree produced a dogged effort which saw them home at 148-8 off the last ball of the day.
But Sutton can take great encouragement from a fine performance.
On Sunday the third team entertained Spring View, who batted first and made 195-6 from 40 overs. Gary Clarke collected four wickets.
Sadly the rain washed out Sutton's reply.
Sponsors this week are George and Dorothy Lanchin and the Sutton Ex-Players.
