A TEENAGER, seriously injured when his cycle was in collision with a bin wagon, died the day before he was to return to Poland to continue his studies.
Sixteen-year-old Polish national Mariusz Mazurek, who was staying in Prestwich, died on Wednesday evening (Aug 23) at North Manchester General Hospital, 48 hours after the horror crash in Bury.
He was in collision with a waste disposal truck in Holcombe Brook on Monday afternoon (Aug 21). He was dragged underneath the HGV, and suffered horrific injuries which included two broken legs, a broken pelvis and head injuries. His grandfather Mr Edmund Straszak of Deyne Avenue, Prestwich, said: "If Mariusz had come through this it would have been a long time before he recovered.
"We were hopeful he would get better but we were also prepared for the worst."
Mariusz, who has two brothers, lived with his father in Gdansk.
He had travelled over to stay in Prestwich where he was reunited with his mother, Renata, who is now married to Mr Straszak's son, Jonathan. Mariusz's parents divorced several years ago.
Mr Straszak said his grandson had just finished school and had spent the last two months in Prestwich. He was due to start college in September with a view to getting a degree and joining his family in England.
An inquest will open next week.
