GREEK international goalkeeper Nikolaos Michopoulos has joined Burnley on a short-term contract.

The 30-year-old has been handed a month's stay at Turf Moor by manager Stan Ternent with the chance to earn a longer deal if he impresses.

"I've signed him for a month to get a good look at him," confirmed Ternent, who has brought Michopoulos back to the club after he trained briefly with the Clarets last week.

Michopoulos, who has won over 20 full caps for his national side, was the first-choice at Greek top-flight club PAOK of Salonika for seven seasons before the arrival of a new coach last season.

He was told earlier in the summer that he could find a new club and Ternent moved to the top of the queue to land the big keeper, who has been handed squad number 34.

And, barring any late mishaps for Paul Crichton ahead of today's game at Wolves, Michopoulos is likely to make his first appearance for the club in the reserves' Avon Insurance League opener at Huddersfield Town next Tuesday night.

Crichton is firmly established as the Clarets' number one and a new keeper has not been top of Ternent's shopping list.

However, with just the untried Craig Mawson as back-up, the boss has taken the opportunity to sound out a highly experienced player with decent credentials who is available without a fee.

Ternent is happy with the squad he has at his disposal after an encouraging start to the new campaign.

But he is always on the look-out and if he can find the right player within the right budget, which is limited compared to a number of Burnley's First Division rivals, he won't hesitate to move.

He said: "We're not the finished article. I need some more competition and some more quality players.

"We'll get them eventually but the players here are doing extremely well.

"I'm more than happy with the squad I've got. Obviously if I can add to it with the same sort of quality or better than I would.

"But I'm not moaning from the roof tops that I need this, I need that or I need the other, because I don't.

"The squad of players we have is good. Certainly we can improve, they can improve as individuals and I can get better quality, if that's possible, in time to come, which they're all well aware of.

"That's a challenge for them. If they want to play in the Burnley first team you've got to be up for it and at it and have no little quality."

Meanwhile, Brad Maylett has had some welcome news as he bids to shake off a run of bad luck on the injury front.

The teenage winger has had the cast removed from his broken wrist and is able to wear just a supportive splint.

Maylett has played in closed-doors games with the injury and will now get the go-ahead to play for the reserves next week.

"It's good news for him. He's been doing extremely well and he's ready for joining our squad," said Ternent.
