GILLINGHAM came to Turf Moor apparently looking for a point and were happy to head back to Kent with mission accomplished.
The First Division debutants lost 3-2 in their previous away game and made sure they wouldn't concede so readily again by packing men behind the ball.
"We set our stall out from the start," admitted player-manager Andy Hessenthaler. "We played 4-5-1 defensively and 4-3-3 going the other way and I thought we more than matched them.
"They had a lot of possession but didn't really hurt us.
"We got the goal and it was just unfortunate that we let it slip near the end with Barry Ashby sliding in and scoring in his own net.
"But I thought we defended very well. It's a very tough place to come. We've been fairly lucky coming to Burnley over the past three years with two wins and a draw. There aren't many teams who will come here and pick up points so I'm pleased." The Gills did their best to strangle the life out of the game early on but after snatching the lead after 66 minutes couldn't hold on for their first win of the season as Glen Little forced the equalising own-goal just four minutes later.
Hessenthaler added: "Glen Little's a very good player. He's the one that stands out for me and causes teams a lot of problems.
"He did today but Patter (Mark Patterson) played him very well. He got away once and they scored from it.
"The second half opened up and it must have been good to watch. In the last 15 minutes it could have gone either way but we were pleased with a point."
