BURNLEY council leader Stuart Caddy, collected nearly £2,700 in expenses and allowances for his town hall work over the past year, according to latest figures.

But the Labour boss did not top the expenses league table for the year to March 31.

That went to former economic and property chairman Tony Harrison, who collected £3,537 during the year before stepping down from the council in May.

Second position went to finance chairman Peter Kenyon, a retired dentist, who qualified for payments of £2,915 -- just ahead of licensing boss Coun Philip Walsh, on £2,909.

Fourth place went to Coun Caddy, with housing chairman and now Mayor of Burnley Coun Rafique Malik, who collected £2,631, to be placed fifth in the table.

All councillors who served for the full year automatically collected a basic allowance of £289.

Additional sums were paid to members who qualified for special responsibility allowances, travel and subsistence expenses and payments for attending meetings.

Councillors who waived claims for attendance, travel or subsistence included Independent group leader Harry Brooks and Labour's Lilian Clark and Mohammed Najib.

Total claims for all councillors during the year topped £58,000.
