BURY Angling Society officers and members travelled to Cudmore Fisheries for an event on the Brewsters Canal with the Officials' Cup going to the winner.

The day was fully-subscribed for the 20-peg event which started in heavy rain but conditions soon improved, although in a six-hour match, several quality carp were lost and three anglers suffered smashed pole sections.

Top weight fell to Jonathan Jowett with 52-5-2. In second place Chris Skinner had 43-14-6 and in third place Dave Jowett Jnr had 43-6-4. Jim Moore won the Officials' Cup having taken sixth individual place with a good net of carp, barbel and chub for 22-5-8.

Daz Shaw travelled down with the party but elected to fish the adjacent 30-peg match on the Suez Canal, taking sixth place with 42-4-0. Top weight fell to Frank Cook with 51-4-0 and only three pounds separated the top four individual weights.

On Thursday evening the National Team Open took place on the Island Lodge. Dave Griffiths repeated his success of the previous week by taking top weight of 7-6-12 while in second place Stephen Gwent took 6-14-0. In third place Graham Smith took 5-11-4 and in fourth place John Fletcher took 4-8-4. The bonus peg failed to yield the winner.

The final match in the series took place last night and the bonus jackpot, if not won, will be distributed to the leading weights.

In the Pilsworth Fisheries Open held on the Bottom Ponds on Monday, A. Smith (Fisherman's Way) had top weight of 18-8-0. In second place Dave Jowett Jnr had 12-8-0 and in third, Jonathan Jowett (Sensas Garbolino) had 12-0-0 . Dave Jowett Snr had 10-3-0 for fourth place.

On the pleasure fishing scene, Parker's is fishing well on the stream-side. Richard Metcalfe enjoyed excellent sport at the weekend, taking roach, perch and skimmer bream with bites every cast.

On Crompton's the weed growth is again causing problems although the carp anglers have cleared pegs, but at the weekend sport was slow.

ROYAL HOTEL SEA ANGLERS

TOTTINGTON

THE club meeting takes place at the Royal Hotel on Sunday, September 3, at 1.30pm. It is essential that all members going on the trip to Stranraer on September 23 and 24 attend to finalise details.

Nine members of the club travelled to Conway to fish aboard Lady Gwen II on August 20. In cracking weather and calm water, they steamed out into Liverpool Bay, fishing a variety of wrecks.

At anchor, on low water on one wreck, they lost several but caught two conger, the best one of 24lb landed by Peter Stewart. Two bull huss to 12lb, more than 50 pollack to 5lb, and some good whiting and codling were taken on jelly worms and sand eels. On the whole, an excellent and enjoyable trip.

BURY DISTRICT SEA ANGLERS

DUE to the Killibegs trip, the September meeting will take place on Monday, September 4, at the Waterloo Hotel, Manchester Road, at 8pm.

BURY SOCIETY SENIOR SECTION

THE September Cup scheduled to take place on the River Irwell on Sunday, September 3, has been transferred to Parker's. At the present time the river level is low despite some rain, but the bank-side paths are heavily overgrown with brambles.

A working party needs to be arranged to carry out this work and a match on the Irwell will be arranged for a later date.
