SINCE writing my earlier letter alerting the public, but especially the police and town council, to the increasing danger of cyclists riding on pavements and in pedestrian shopping areas, there have been two examples of serious injuries.

The first was a cyclist knocking over a student nurse in Market Street, Manchester, while she was shopping. She suffered a fractured skull and brain damage. The cyclists got nine months jail (or effectively six months).

The second incident, in a Stockport park, involved an elderly lady who was run into by a youth on a skate-board. She also received head injuries.

These accidents should sound alarm signals for our 52 councillors as well as the police.

Councillors are servants of the community and they seem to be turning a blind eye to these dangers. Perhaps this letter will help to jolt them into taking action to ensure that the accidents in Stockport and Manchester do not occur here.
