AT the end of the summer, people of all ages are looking forward to a new term in college, starting new courses, learning new skills and making new friends.
There is a group of people who feel excluded from this because a hearing loss prevents participation. Hearing the tutor can be a problem and communication with other class members awkward.
The good news is that there is a class which caters for their needs. The Lipreading and Understanding Hearing Loss class is specially designed for people who have a hearing loss and for their relatives and friends.
Communication within the group is therefore easier and more relaxed and the tutor will be fully trained to ensure everyone is included and able to follow what is going on.
During the class, various aspects of hearing loss are discussed and help and advice offered on a variety of difficult situations, as well as learning to make the best use of residual hearing, hearing aids and lipreading skills. Many people gain enough confidence to go on to other courses in different subjects.
Classes are held on Monday afternoons 1-3pm, in Darwen Access Point and on Thursday evenings 6.30-8.30pm, in Blackburn College, both starting in the week of September 18.
Anyone wishing to join can come along and be assured of a warm welcome.
BETTY NEWSHAM (lipreading tutor), Stanhill Lane, Oswaldtwistle.
