RESIDENTS living in an area of Penwortham have failed to rid neighbouring streets of traffic calming measures which, they claim, are creating a rat run for traffic.
A decision by the Higher Penwortham Area Committee on Monday, August 21, revealed that speed humps in Walton Avenue will be retained, but residents have gained concessions.
South Ribble Borough Council installed the humps last year. But residents claim that the humps are too high, causing damage to vehicles as well as forcing motorists to use 'hump-free' routes.
Last week the Citizen highlighted the plight of one angry resident, Peter Reed, of Carlisle Avenue, who claimed that it would not be long before a child was killed on his doorstep.
Councillors did suggest at the meeting, however, that the height of the humps in Belgrave Avenue and Broad Oak Lane would be reduced and widened to cover the full width of the road.
And speed cushions in Blackpool Drive will be removed and replaced by pinch points, which involves narrowing the road to allow just one lane of traffic to pass and the other lane restricted.
