FURTHER to the implementation of the 'No Drinking' law and signs being erected to inform people, I have to say that it has, so far, been a fiasco.
My elderly parents in law came to stay with us last week and decided to take a stroll down the promenade in the evening sunshine, only to be faced with an old seafront shelter full of drunks!
Some were asleep on the benches and others were on the floor amongst the debris of plastic alcohol bottles. One woke up as they walked past and promptly urinated up the wall, directly in front of them. Needless to say, they were frightened and horrified.
I called the police three times on Thursday between 6.30pm and 8pm regarding the same behaviour opposite our house and they told me that there was no crime because they couldn't see them with their CCTV camera! I was livid and so was my neighbour who had also called.
I went out and spoke to them myself and told them that there is a 'No drinking' rule on the seafront .The response was a torrent of abuse and they told me that the police wouldn't and couldn't touch them.
I phoned the police again and they finally sent someone out to deal with it.
I know that our parents and family now only visit Morecambe because we are here, but how many others are driven away by such anti social behaviour but say nothing and never return.
I have informed a member of our tourism group of this situation and it was quite obvious that she was totally unaware of any of these incidents.
It's time to get 'hands on' and have a promenade patrol to keep our visitors safe and happy, otherwise, there won't be any left!
