ST ANNES went down to Leyland by 21 runs on Saturday (August 26) writes John Richardson.
Dave Callaghan trapped Leyland professional Neil Rimmer LBW for a duck and St Annes' opening pace bowlers stayed on top with Steven Twist having Ian McDonnell caught behind for five. Leyland were soon reeling at 28-6 with Whalley taking four catches behind the stumps.
But a seventh wicket partnership of 24 and a last wicket partnership of 29 restored their innings. Dave Callaghan returned impressive bowling figures of 5-33 and Steven Twist took 4-51.
In reply St Annes lost their first two wickets for 17 but Darlington and Twist put the score on to 44 before the latter was caught behind for nine and Russ Bradley was LBW next ball for a duck.
The game swung dramatically in Leyland's favour when St Annes lost their next four wickets for only 17 runs.
A ninth wicket partnership of 27 between Joe Davies and Zac Taylor put St Annes back in contention before Davies was caught off Kenyon for 20.
One run later John Cotton was LBW to Neil Kenyon for nought.
Leyland play Lancaster on Saturday.
