MORECAMBE had a mixed bank holiday weekend, but put themselves back on track with a resounding win at home to big-spending Nuneaton at Christie Park.
Steve Walters opened his account on 15 minutes to put Jim Harvey's men ahead and John Norman added another before the break.
Sykes hit back for Nuneaton on 70 minutes but a rare Stewart Drummond goal restored the advantage before Ryan Zico-Black hit home on 85 minutes. King gave Nuneaton some consolation two minutes later.
Saturday's visit to Northwich brought disappointment, however, with Morecambe failing to get to grips with a fired up home side.
Richard Norris should have opened the scoring for Northwich inside the first minute and the hosts raided several times in the opening stages. Phil Eastwood was again Morecambe's liveliest forward and created a chance for himself after just eight minutes, cutting in past a stricken Northwich defender to give himself a site of goal before seeing his shot go well wide. And Eastwood was unlucky to have a goal ruled out on 18 minutes when he was called offside, despite the fact that the ball ricocheted of a defender before arriving at his feet. However, Northwich's grip remained and Adie Mike should have scored from Mark Devlin's good cutback halfway through the half. But, on 34 minutes, Vics' liveliest attacker, winger Gary Fletcher, broke the deadlock.
He ran powerfully at the defence and, laid the ball off to Adie Mike. Debut boy Jamie Murphy got a vital toe in but the ball fell kindly for Fletcher who didn't need a second chance.
A triple substitution ten minutes into he second half livened Morecambe up, with record signing Steve Walters determined to prove a point against his former team-mates, with a couple of crunching tackles which came o the attention of the referee.
The 1,000 crowd were on the edge of their seats as Morecambe pressed for a late equaliser, with Ryan-Zico Black going close before two close range John Norman headers in injury time gave his side hope. From the second, Morecambe's final chance came from an unlikely source - defender Jamie Bates nearly putting through his own net. The celebrations on the final whistle demonstrated what a major scalp Morecambe have become for some of the lesser lights in the conference. But Morecambe will need to improve if they want their glowing reputation to be further enhanced.
