RIVAL gardeners Donald Kershaw and Keith McCarren were involved in a head-to-head war of the roses -- and other plants -- duel at Rawtenstall, Edgeside and District Amateur Gardeners' Society 85th annual show.
In the closest ever battle Don won the Birtwistle silver cup for most points in the flower and vegetable sections by a single point, 54-53.
He also harvested trophies for best exhibit in the flower classes, best dahlia, most points in the dahlia section , top chrysanthemum and most points in the flower section.
Keith took home silverware for best vegetable, tray of vegetables, plate of potatoes and most points in the vegetable classes.
The show was held at the Unitarian Church, Rawtenstall, and trophies were presented by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rossendale, Coun David Hancock and his wife Denise.
