THE gang who held a post master and his wife hostage threatened the terrified couple with an axe, it was revealed today.
Raymond and Irene Clayson were held hostage overnight in their home in Barrow, near Whalley, by the gang who robbed their post office in Shadsworth yesterday morning.
The couple, who are both in their 50s, were tied up in their own home and subjected to what police describe as an "horrendous ordeal".
The Claysons returned home from work on Monday night to find the masked robbers in their property. They were held for around 12 hours and subjected to a series of threats.
The couple were left traumatised and are still being interviewed by police officers after receiving medical treatment from a doctor.
Detective Inspector Bob Eastwood, the man in charge of the investigation, said: "These men are obviously hardened criminals who are prepared to use whatever means possible to obtain money.
"This couple are extremely upset and traumatised by what has happened to them and by what can only be described as an horrendous ordeal."
Police say a substantial amount of cash was taken from the post office in what they believe was a meticulously planned operation.
Detectives think the men must have followed the couple on at least one occasion to their home address.
A team of detectives has been set up to investigate the raid and are appealing for people in Shadsworth and Whalley to help with their inquiry.
They believe two white vans were used by the thieves and also want to hear from anyone who may have seen a G registered white Rover 420 in Shadsworth on Tuesday morning.
The car belongs to the Mr Clayson and was stolen by the three raiders and has still not been recovered.
Shadsworth Post Office remained closed today while forensic scientists examined the area for clues.
