DEMOLITION teams have moved onto the 11-acre former Prestige site -- the first step in the multi-million pounds redevelopment of the one-time flagship of Burnley industry.
The listed frontage, a row of columns capped by flaming torches at the Colne Road main gateway to the town, will be retained as a major feature of the Sainsbury's store and offices development which will replace the former cookware works.
The gateway, designed by architects Wallis, Gilbert and Partners in the mid 1930s, has been described as an architectural gem and is a Grade l l listed building.
Contractors have also been told to leave the old boardroom exactly as it is, pending a decision on its future.
The multi-million pound redevelopment will create 600 jobs -- more than were lost when the factory closed in 1996 -- and will be completed by the summer of next year.
The scheme includes a new Sainsbury's superstore, replacing the present Church Street premises, together with retail, restaurant and office development, possibly including a cyber cafe.
The mixed retail and office project will also include new development to create a business and technology centre, car parking spaces and the redevelopment of The Adelphi pub.
