A BLACKPOOL tram is retiring to the States after nearly 40 years of ferrying passengers around the resort.
Tram 606, a single-deck open-air vehicle, will be setting off on a 10-day journey by boat from Liverpool on September 18 to Trolleyville, Ohio.
And, in return, Blackpool Transport will receive a rare double-decker tram -- Standard No. 147-- which originally operated in Blackpool.
Sold to an American enthusiast in the early 1960s, the double-decker is expected back in the resort in October.
It will undergo a restoration programme which will see the tram returned to its original green and cream livery and is expected to be in service by Easter 2002.
Blackpool transport spokesperson Liz Esnouf said: "We really want to get this tram back to Blackpool as it is an important part of local history. We have seen photos of the tram and are all excited about its return."
