SCOOTER-CRAZY kids across East Lancashire are being targeted in a safety blitz.
Trading standards officers have warned that some of the micro machines may need additional safety attachments which the manufacturers will provide free of charge.
The 900 RTT scooters, available in Woolworths at £69.99, have been recalled by the makers following a number of accidents in the south of England when injuries have been caused to fingers as the scooters are folded up.
Torquay-based manufacturers Olop have taken on a voluntary withdrawal from shops to fit additional safety mechanisms.
The company is also keen to recall all sold scooters from customers.
A spokesman from Olop said: "A guard will be fitted free of charge at Woolworths stores throughout the UK from September 14.
"The guard will be fitted whether the scooter was purchased from Woolworths or any other stockist and a proof of purchase will not be needed."
Chris Allen from Blackburn with Darwen Trading Standards office, said: "To this company's credit they are recalling their product in an effort to make it safer but if anyone has any concerns at all about their scooters they should contact their local trading standards office."
Jim Potts for Lancashire's Trading Standards Office said: "There is a recall on the 900 RTT and a number of other scooters are being tested for safety.
"We would urge parents to keep these scooters away from very small children and also to check the folding mechanisms themselves. If they have any concerns at all they should contact us on 0845 600 1352."
