NEIL Simpson looked set to avenge his Scottish Rally disappointment by claiming a career-best second on the Manx International today.
Simpson, who was disqualified from the event for using the brake pads, is lying second overall going into the last day of competition. The Colne driver has been the surprise of the rally, outpacing faster, more agile Formula 2 cars in his slower, group N 'showroom' specification Mitsubishi Evo6.
After 18 of 26 stages, Simpson and co-driver Michael Gibson are four minutes behind the Vauxhall Astra of former British champion Mark Higgins.
The winner of the final round of the Mobil1 British Rally Championship will be declared on Douglas promenade this afternoon.
