Grimsby 0, Bolton 1

THE Mariners were sunk by Bolton super sub Michael Ricketts as the Wanderers maintained their marvellous start to the new season.

Ricketts came off the bench and had been on the pitch only 17 minutes when he hooked home the decisive goal from 12 yards.

Bolton had ridden their luck early on when ex-Rover Steve Livingstone missed a great chance and keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen made a brilliant save from Kingsley Black.

But the win, Bolton's fifth in six league outings, means they stay third in the table, a far cry from the difficult start manager Sam Allardyce anticipated for his injury hit squad.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield went down at home for the eighth successive game when losing 2-0 to Wimbledon, with John Hartson adding two more goals to give him four in two matches.

Norwich had their first win of the season to maintain a record of never losing at Edgeley Park.

Jim Whitley, on loan from Manchester City, netted after 15 minutes and Iwan Roberts added two either side of David Smith's reply for Stockport.

Crewe conceded their first goal of the season and it was enough to give West Brom a 1-0 win, their first away victory since March. Lee Hughes stole the points in the 14th minute.

Clinton Morrison got the winner in Crystal Palace's 1-0 win over Barnsley but he also had a penalty saved by Kevin Miller.
