THE horror of war was just around the corner when these young Tyldesleyites posed for the camera in 1937 at the town's British School.
Alfred Street twins Des and the late Ray Sloan pose with school pals who include their cousin and neighbour Joyce Schofield (second row, third from left) who sent in this photograph via her cousin Cyril Evans who lives in Green Avenue, Astley. Mr Evans, himself a native of Tyldesley who grew up in Alfred Street, tells us Des (extreme right, front row seated next to his brother Ray) still lives in Tyldesley. Younger members of the community may also recall him being employed as a school caretaker.
Their late brother, Jack, played post war for first division soccer side Leeds United.
Mr Evans was also able to recognise Henry Jones (second left, third row) who was a coal bagger for the Co-op.
Cousin Joyce, whose married name is Bradburn, now lives in Kearsley. NON
