A THIEF came clean when police eventually caught up with him for a shoplifting matter.
Blackburn magistrates heard that Stewart Riddell had tried to steal 20 boxes of air fresheners worth £80 from Sainsbury's.
But he was left holding fresh air after security staff gave chase and he dropped his haul and ran off.
Riddell was identified by police who viewed closed circuit TV footage and arrested him six days later.
Riddell, 27, of Laurel Avenue, Darwen, pleaded guilty to theft.
He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £50 costs.
Stephen Parker, defending, said Riddell had moved to Morecambe with his partner and their children but things had not worked out.
He had moved back to Darwen and was having difficulties sorting out his benefit claim.
"He wanted to attempt a reconciliation with his girlfriend but did not have enough money for his fare to Morecambe," said Mr Parker.
