BURNLEY police officers today warned shoplifters that if they are caught they could face a 12 month ban from the town centre.
During the last week the police, with help from the town's CCTV operators, have made 15 arrests for theft offences in the centre and have warned that the chance of being caught shoplifting in the town will increase during the next four weeks.
Sergeant Jon Bullas said: "The number of officers in the town centre will increase significantly in the next four weeks with a remit to target thieves. These extra police officers will be drafted into the town and will be working closely with the shops in order to catch those responsible."
Anyone caught shoplifting may also receive a 12 month ban from all shops participating in the crackdown campaign.
Plain clothes police officers will also be visiting various town centre premises in order to ascertain where stolen goods are being sold and who to and second hand shops will also be checked.
Sgt Bullas warned that the penalty at court for handling stolen goods can include a significant prison sentence.
He said: "We are concerned at the large number of women with young children who are shoplifting in the town.
"We would warn those individuals who are considering coming to Burnley to steal to think again as we are determined to stop you.
"CCTV cameras are now extensively deployed around Burnley and have assisted in numerous arrests. Thieves have been spotted after they left premises and have subsequently arrested."
He added: "Don't think that if you leave the shop that you have got away with it."
