POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road Traffic accident which occurred on the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M62, close to Rainhill Stoops, at about 9.45pm on Tuesday, November 14.

An 18-year-old woman was riding a 250cc motorcycle along the centre lane of the M62 when she collided with the rear of a Vauxhall Cavalier and was thrown into the nearside lane of the carriageway, where she was struck by another vehicle.

Faith Down, from Penketh, Warrington, sustained multiple injuries from which she later died. An inquest was opened and adjourned on Friday, November 17, pending the result of the police investigation.

Police are anxious to trace a number of people who were travelling on the M62 at the time of the accident, who may be able to help with inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "It is known that a number of vehicles swerved to avoid the collision, while others weaved through the wreckage immediately after the collision. We would like these people to come forward, along with any other witnesses.

"A number of witnesses have already spoken to the police, but considering the amount of traffic on the motorway at that time there may be others. In particular, we would like to speak to the driver of a HGV chemical tanker, which assisted in stopping traffic at the scene after the collision."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at St Helens on 0151 777 6969, or the Police Traffic Department on 0151 777 5730.
